The selfie mirror problem

Front-facing cameras show a mirrored preview on purpose. Looking at a live un-mirrored image of yourself is disorienting — raise your right hand and it moves on the wrong side of the screen — so phones flip the preview to behave like a mirror.

The trouble starts when the recording is saved that way too, which many phones and apps do so the file matches what you saw while filming. The result looks fine until something in shot has writing on it: a logo on your shirt, a whiteboard behind you, a street sign, a book cover. All of itreads backwards, and viewers notice immediately even when they cannot say why the shot feels odd. Mirror horizontally restores real-world orientation.

Flipping is not rotating

These get confused constantly and produce very different results, so it is worth being precise:

Two conclusions fall out of that table. A flip produces a reflection; a rotation does not.So if your video is lying on its side, this is the wrong tool — userotate video, or you will get an upright picture with everything mirrored.

And for upside-down footage, use Both rather than Flip vertically. Vertical alone gives you an upright image that is also mirrored, which is almost never what anyone wants. Both is identical to a 180° rotation, so either tool gets you there.

Where each mode earns its place

  • Mirror horizontally — un-mirroring selfie video, webcam recordings and video-call captures. Also useful deliberately: mirroring a clip so a subject faces into the frame rather than out of it, or reversing the apparent direction of movement in an edit.
  • Flip vertically — cameras mounted upside down on a rig, a ceiling bracket, or a copy stand. Rarely needed alone, but nothing else fixes it.
  • Both — footage recorded fully inverted, most often from an action camera mounted upside down.

What the encode does

Mirroring cannot be done with a stream copy — the pixels have to be rebuilt — so flipping always re-encodes. Output is H.264 at CRF 20, one of the higher-quality settings used on this site, withaudio re-encoded to AAC at 128 kbps rather than passed through. Dimensions are rounded to even numbers as H.264 requires, and the container is always MP4 so it plays everywhere.

That is one generation of compression, visually very hard to spot at CRF 20. Sync is not affected: flipping changes where pixels sit within a frame, never when frames appear.
