An object remover erases something from a photo and fills the gap with background that matches its surroundings. What inpainting actually does

Deleting something from a photograph leaves a hole, and the real work is inventing what belongs there.Inpainting treats that hole as a prediction problem: given everything visible around the gap, what continuation is most plausible? The model reads the whole surrounding region, follows the direction of textures and edges into the masked area, and generates pixels that carry on the pattern. That is why it copes with sky, water, grass, sand, gravel, and plain walls, and why it struggles when the missing area contained something structured it cannot infer, such as a face, printed text, or a straight architectural line running through the middle of the mask.

The brush gives you exact control and is the right choice for thin objects like cables and poles, or for small spots. Adjust the size and paint a little beyond the edge of the object so its shadow and any colour fringe are included; masks that stop exactly at the outline often leave a faint ghost.Smart Select runs a segmentation model so a single click snaps a mask around a whole object, which saves a lot of painting on complex shapes such as a person or a parked car. It loads a small extra model the first time you enable it.

Getting a clean result

  1. Work in passes. Erase one object, check the fill, then move to the next rather than masking everything at once.
  2. Include the shadow. An object removed without its shadow looks wrong immediately.
  3. Mask slightly wide, so no rim of the original object survives at the edge.
  4. Avoid masking across a strong straight line or a face; the model cannot reliably reconstruct either.
  5. Zoom in on the patch before downloading, since softness is easiest to spot at full size.

Using this responsibly

Two limits are worth stating plainly. First, copyright: removing a watermark or credit from an image you do not own does not give you the right to use it, and doing so to republish stock or press photography is unlawful in most jurisdictions. Use this on your own images, or ones you have permission to edit. Second,context: erasing objects from a photograph that documents something real, such as a news image, an insurance claim, or evidence, misrepresents it. Keep the original file either way, because inpainting is not reversible once you have saved over it.

    No. The inpainting model runs on your own device through ONNX Runtime Web, using WebGPU or WebAssembly. Your image is read into browser memory, processed locally, and the finished PNG is handed straight back to you.
  • What kinds of things can it erase convincingly?
    Small to medium objects sitting on fairly uniform surroundings: strangers in the background, passing cars, power lines, bins, timestamps, dust spots and blemishes, and clutter against sky, water, grass, sand, or a plain wall.
  • How is this different from a clone stamp?
    A clone stamp copies pixels you point it at, which produces visible repetition on anything patterned. Inpainting generates new pixels conditioned on the whole surrounding region, so it can continue a texture such as foliage or gravel without an obvious repeat.
  • Why does a large erased area look soft or smudged?
    Inference runs at up to 512 pixels on the long side to stay fast in a browser, and the generated patch is then scaled back to your full resolution. A small mask survives that comfortably; a very large one is visibly softer than its surroundings. Two or three smaller passes beat one huge stroke.
  • Does the rest of my photo lose quality?
    No. Only the pixels inside your mask are replaced. The tool stencils the generated patch into the masked region and composites it over your untouched original, so every pixel outside the mask keeps its full-resolution detail, and the result saves as a lossless PNG.
  • Why does the first run take a few seconds to start?
    The model is about 27 MB and downloads once, split into two parts, then your browser caches it. Later removals in the same session start immediately. Turning on Smart Select loads a small additional segmentation model the first time you use it.
  • Is it legal to remove a watermark from an image?
    Only on images you own or have permission to edit, such as clearing your own logo or a timestamp from your own photo. Stripping a watermark from someone else’s copyrighted or stock image to reuse it is unlawful in most countries, and removing a credit does not grant you a licence.
