GPA Calculator
Calculate GPA online free — add your courses, grades and credit hours for weighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. In-browser processing — no upload, no account.
A GPA calculator converts each course grade to grade points, weights it by credit hours, and divides the total by your credits. This one does semester GPA andcumulative GPA on the Indian 10-point scale, the US 4.0 scale and a 5.0 scale, with an optional weighted GPA mode. Grades never leave your browser.
How to calculate GPA with credit hours
Add a row per course, choose the grade, and enter the credit hours. The tool multiplies each grade by its credits to produce quality points, sums them, and divides by total credits, showing GPA, total credits and total quality points live as you type. The course-name box is only a label for your own benefit — it plays no part in the arithmetic and nothing is saved when you close the tab.
Four rows are there when you arrive and you can add as many more as you need. Credits accept half steps up to 20, and any row left at 0 credits is excluded automatically, which is the clean way to park a pass/fail or audited course without deleting it.
Choose the right grading scale first
The scale dropdown opens on the 10-point scale used across Indian universities, so switch it to 4.0 before entering American letter grades — otherwise the grade menu offers numbers rather than letters. Each scale exposes a different set of options:
- 10-point (default): half-point steps from 10 down to 4, plus 0 for a fail. There is deliberately no option between 4 and 0, because a 4 is the pass mark on most Indian schemes.
- 4.0 scale: full letter modifiers — A+/A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0.
- 5.0 scale: numeric half steps from 5.0 down to 0, for institutions that grade out of five directly.
Weighted GPA is 4.0-scale only
Tick Weighted on the 4.0 scale and a per-course Level column appears: Regular adds nothing, Honors adds 0.5, AP/IB adds 1.0, and the bonus is capped so no single course can exceed 5.0. The option is hidden on the 10-point and 5.0 scales on purpose, since Honors/AP tagging is a US high-school convention that does not map onto them.
| Course | Grade | Level | Credits | Unweighted points | Weighted points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | A | AP | 4 | 4.0 | 5.0 |
| Chemistry | A− | Honors | 3 | 3.7 | 4.2 |
| English | A | Regular | 3 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| PE | C | Regular | 1 | 2.0 | 2.0 |
Unweighted that is 41.1 quality points over 11 credits = 3.74. Weighted it becomes 46.6 over 11 = 4.24. Notice the 1-credit C drags both figures down by roughly the same amount while the 4-credit courses set the level — credits matter as much as grades.
Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA
Semester GPA covers one term. Cumulative GPA credit-weights every term you have completed, and that weighting is where hand calculations go wrong. Averaging two GPAs only works if both terms carry the same credits: 3.2 over 90 credits plus 4.0 over 15 is not 3.6, it is (3.2×90 + 4.0×15) ÷ 105 = 3.31.
The Cumulative tab does exactly that sum from four typed numbers, which also makes it a what-if planner. Worth knowing: the two tabs do not talk to each other. Calculate the term in Semester GPA, read the figure, then type it into Cumulative along with your existing record. The scale you picked on the Semester tab still governs the input limits on the Cumulative tab.

Limits worth knowing before you rely on the number
Grade-point tables are set by each institution and a few use values that differ by a decimal from the standard US table above — check your registrar if a borderline decimal decides a scholarship. This tool also does not model grade replacement after a retake, honors-programme minimums, or the recalculated GPA a specific university applies to applicants. Nothing is stored, so there is no history: screenshot anything you want to keep.
Converting a 10-point CGPA to a percentage, or the other way, is a different calculation with university-specific multipliers — the percentage ↔ CGPA converter covers those. If you are filling in application forms, theexam tools hub collects the photo, signature and eligibility utilities, including the exam age limit calculator. Working out what a course of study will cost is the student loan calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my GPA with credit hours?
Convert each grade to grade points, multiply by that course’s credit hours to get quality points, add them all up, then divide by total credits: GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits. A 3-credit A and a 1-credit C give (4.0×3 + 2.0×1) ÷ 4 = 3.50. Credits are the reason a small course barely moves your average.Which grading scales does this GPA calculator support?
Three: the Indian 10-point scale in half-point steps (10, 9.5, 9…4, then 0), the US 4.0 scale with full letter modifiers, and a numeric 5.0 scale. The 10-point scale is selected by default, so switch the dropdown to 4.0 first if you are entering American letter grades.Does the weighted GPA option work on every scale?
No — weighting only appears when you pick the 4.0 scale, because Honors and AP/IB bonuses are a US high-school convention. Tick Weighted and a Level column appears per course: Regular adds nothing, Honors adds 0.5, AP/IB adds 1.0, and the result is capped at 5.0.What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 no matter how hard the course was. Weighted GPA credits difficulty, so an A in AP Calculus counts 5.0 instead of 4.0 and can push your average above 4.0. Colleges often recalculate to their own scale, so report whichever figure your school prints on the transcript. How do I calculate my cumulative GPA across semesters?
Switch to the Cumulative tab and type four numbers: your current GPA, credits completed so far, this term’s GPA and this term’s credits. It credit-weights them as (old GPA × old credits + term GPA × term credits) ÷ total credits. The two tabs are separate, so the semester result is not carried across for you.Why can I not just average my two semester GPAs?
Because averaging ignores credit weight, and it only gives the right answer when both terms carry identical credits. A 3.2 across 90 credits plus a 4.0 across 15 credits is 3.31, not 3.6 — the older 90 credits dominate. This is the single most common cumulative-GPA mistake. What GPA do I need next term to reach my target?
Work the Cumulative tab backwards: keep your completed credits fixed and try different values in “this term’s GPA” until the result hits your target. With 90 credits at 3.30, a perfect 15-credit 4.0 term only reaches 3.40 — seeing that ceiling early is the point of planning with a calculator. Are pass/fail, withdrawn or transfer credits included?
They should not be. P/F, W and most transfer credits carry no grade points at most institutions, though P credits still count toward graduation. Leave those rows out entirely, or set their credits to 0 — any row with zero credits is dropped from the calculation automatically.
