Both are far larger than they ever appear on screen, and that is intentional. YouTube generates several smaller versions from the file you upload, so starting large means the small versions are sharp. Starting small means every version is soft, and there is no way to recover the detail afterwards.

Designing for the size it is actually seen at

A thumbnail is created at 1280 pixels wide and judged at about 200. On a phone in a crowded feed it may be smaller still. That single fact drives every sensible decision: one clear subject rather than a busy scene, strong contrast so the shape reads instantly, and if you add text later,three or four words at most in a very heavy weight. Faces work because they read at any size, and a face with a legible expression reads better than a face in shadow. The reliable test is to export your thumbnail, shrink it to roughly 200 pixels wide, and look at it from across the room. If you cannot tell what the video is about, neither can anyone scrolling.

The corner you should keep clear

YouTube overlays the video duration in the bottom-right corner of the thumbnail, and in some contexts a progress bar sits along the bottom edge for videos a viewer has already started. Anything you place there is partly hidden. Keep that corner as background, and keep your subject and any text out of the lower strip entirely. It is the single most common avoidable mistake in an otherwise good thumbnail.

Banners are cropped differently on every device

A channel banner is the trickiest asset on YouTube, because the same 2560 × 1440 file is displayed at very different crops. A television shows nearly the whole image. A desktop browser shows a wide central strip. A phone shows even less. Only the middle region, around 1546 × 423 pixels, is reliably visible everywhere. The practical approach is to treat that central band as the actual design — channel name, tagline, logo — and everything outside it as extended background that fills the frame on a TV. Putting your channel name near the top or bottom of a banner means most visitors never see it.

Export format and file size

1. Choose JPG for a photographic thumbnail; it is smaller and the compression is invisible on a photo.
2. Choose PNG if the design is mostly flat colour, a logo, or sharp text, where JPEG leaves halos around hard edges.
3. Check the reported size against the 2 MB thumbnail limit before uploading.
4. Compress rather than shrink if you are over the limit — reducing dimensions costs more quality than compression does.
5. Keep the source file. You will want to re-cut the thumbnail eventually, and re-cropping an export loses quality.
